There is a cinema complex on the way home where many people come and go. At the entrance of the cinema is a numbered ticket dispenser. Sometimes as I pass by I just take a numbered ticket for no reason. The tickets attest to my past footsteps when I arrange them in a pile in my room. I am reminded that I passed by the cinema at 00:00 on 00, 00th. I may be so obsessed with people and life that I want to testify to my being at a certain place and time. The numbered tickets are sort of a testimony either to my presence or absence. They are kind of performance photos.

This work is created to dispense numbered tickets of one’s own poems capturing thoughts of time and being. Once a numbered ticket reaches the hands of a viewer, it begins its own history. It may be destined to be crumpled in an instant. It is an effervescent image (by its very nature of being paper) that may disappear soon even though it is treasured for the moment. The act of making a thing of ourselves even temporarily makes us human beings. Although one cannot always be conscious, I hope that people have many questions in their mind at least while they appreciate my work.

집으로 오는 길에 큰 영화관이 있다. 백화점과 서점을 오가는 사람이 많은 영화관 입구에는 티켓발매를 위한 대기표 발행기가 있는데, 나는 가끔 일없이 번호표를 뽑아 지나가곤 했다. 그렇게 뽑아온 번호표가 방에 수북이 쌓일 때쯤 정리를 하고 있노라면,‘아! ○일 ○시에 영화관 앞을 지나갔었군’하며 과거 나의 행적들을 증명 받는다. 이러한 사소한 기록까지 끌어안고 사는 나는 세상사람의 삶에 대한 애착이 너무 큰 것인지도 모르겠다. 하지만 내 존재를 어느 장소, 어느 시간에 정확히 증거하고 싶다는 생각에 사로잡힐 때가 있다. 번호표는 이런 나에게 존재증명이자 부재증명이다. 일종의 행위사진이라 하겠다.

이 작업은 존재와 시간에 대한 생각을 바탕으로 한 본인의 시가 번호표에 찍혀 나오게 되어있다. 번호표가 관객의 손에 쥐어지면 그 다음부터 번호표는 독자적인 역사를 갖게 될 것이다. 금새 구겨져서 버려질 수도 있겠고, 간직된다 하더라도 머지않은 시일 내에 사라져 갈(종이특성상) 이미지이다. 순간적일지라도 우리가 자신의 존재에 있어서 자신의 존재를 문제삼는 행위가 인간으로서 존재하게 한다고 생각한다. 언제나 의식적일 수는 없다. 적어도 내 작업과 만나는 순간에는 많은 내적 질문이 일어나길 기대해본다.
