첫 번째 개인전 Objet O (2011)는 이미 많은 사진과 이미지들이 세상에 존재한다는 사실이 작업의 출발점이었다. 그래서 기존의 오브제들을 조합해서 사진으로 기록하는 작업으로 마무리 되었었다. 타인에 대한 관심과 함께 기존의 사진들을 이용하는 작업을 하면 좋을 것 같다고 생각했다. 나는 지난 개인전을 준비하던 중 이베이에서 오래된 대학졸업 사진첩을 구입했다. 사진들은 인쇄된 것이 아니라 졸업생들의 증명사진들이 끼워진 앨범의 형태였고, 헤어스타일이나 포즈 등에서 막연하게 나마 세월을 짐작할 수 있었다. 흑백사진이어서 그랬는지 그 당시와 지금의 스타일의 갭 때문이었는지 나는 이내 곧 그들의 나이를 짐작해냈고, 그들이 정말 ‘졸업’ 해버렸을 수도 있겠다는 생각이 들었다.
개인전이 끝난 후에는 그들의 사진을 스캔해서 나만의 방식으로 가공하고 내 작업의 연장선에서 의미를 첨가해보는 작업을 했지만 맘에 들지 않았고, 뭔가 누군가의 추억을 훼손하는 듯한 느낌도 들어 조심스러웠다. 같은 형식은 아니지만 사진앨범의 형태를 살리기로 하고 내용도 추억의 주인공들에 주목하기로 했다. 나는 그들이 건너온 세월을 고려하고 중의적인 의미를 담아 ‘ 졸업’ 이라고 제목을 붙였다. 그들이 지금 그 당시를 추억할 수 있는지는 잘 모르겠다. 다만 부족하게 나마 작업의 일단락을 지으면서 사진의 힘에 대해서 더욱 크게 느낀 계기가 아니었나 생각한다.
As for my first solo exhibit Objet O (2011), the fact that a lot of photos and images exist in the world already became a starting point of the works. Therefore, it was completed with the works to combine the existing objets and recording them in photos. I thought it would be good to do the works using the existent photos with interest in others. While preparing for my last exhibit, I bought an old yearbook on eBay. Rather than printed photos, it was an album where graduates’ portrait shots were inserted and I could roughly guess the time passed from their hairstyles or poses. I soon succeeded in guessing their age maybe because those photos were in black and white or because there was a gap in past and present styles and thought they really had ‘graduated’.
After my exhibit OTHERS (2018), I scanned their photos and processed them in my own way, adding a meaning on an extension of my work. However, I couldn’t like it and was also cautious about damaging memories of someone. Though there was a difference in formats, I decided to make the most of the form of the photo album and pay attention to main characters in memories. It was titled ‘The Graduate’ with the consideration on days they spent and also with the dual meaning. I don’t know if now they can recall those days. However, I think it gave me an opportunity to strongly feel the power of photos while finishing my work even if it may be a bit lacking.
