Another World, Hidden Behind Subjects \u3163 Ejung Ban, Art Critic<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Others by Okjoo Kang is an ongoing project that started in 2016, which features a series of photographs where the subjects are intentionally thrown out of focus. The out-of-focus photographs may seem to tie in to a single collection, but they are divided into the series Arrival and Departure (2018), Crossing (2017) and Hanami (2017), each different in the points in time they were taken and their themes. Arrival and Departure captures train stations (4 to 5 stations in Paris) where travelers arrive and depart, Crossing captures people crossing the streets in Japan, and Hanami captures people in Japan enjoying cherry blossoms. What the three series have in common are that they were shot in foreign countries and that they intentionally throw the subjects out of focus. As the subjects are not in focus, most of their identities are lost in the series, and it is difficult to figure out the artist\u2019s intentions. The biggest clue one can is from the artist\u2019s note that says \u201cthe crushed images that exist only in certain situations and impressions\u201d are the imagery of \u201cothers\u201d. The photographed subjects and the three themes do not seem to take a big part in the series. Because even though the titles of the themes may be straightforward and self-explanatory, by looking merely at the photographs, it is not actually easy to figure out what their themes are. There would be no problem giving all three series the same title, People Outside. With the photographs that obscure the identity of the subjects and depict the \u201cothers\u201d as an anonymous mass, one can assume that the actual subject of this project exists in another world.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n

When examined how Kang\u2019s work develops from the first solo exhibition Objet O (2011) to the fourth solo exhibition Others (2018), the subjects and expressions differ so vastly that it is almost hard to see them as coming from one artist. The first solo exhibition featured photographs that neatly set up objects laying in Kang\u2019s studio. The objects do not have anything in common, other than the fact that they are her belongings. As it was mentioned in an interview that the work was made because Kang \u201cthought the objects that one owns gives a lot of information about the person\u201d, it is close to a self-portrait made from portraits of objects. It\u2019s Pouring (2014), a series of photographs of various buckets and washbowls, is similar to Object O in that they are photographs where the numbers and compositions of the subjects were coordinated in detail. It is also similar to Others in that they physically obscured the identity of the subjects, as the photographs in It\u2019s Pouring are graphically modified with streaks of lines. However, it is hard to figure out why the buckets were photographed or why they were filtered with noise. That is because the work follows the idioms and grammar that only the artist knows about.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Likewise, there does not seem to be much similarities between the series produced before the first solo exhibition. However, they are in line with the series made after the first show, in that most of them photographed objects of the same kind repeatedly. As in the series Gami (2010), where same-sized pieces of paper ripped from a spiral notebook are made into origami and then unfolded, Feuille Morte (2006), where maple leaves are shot on Polaroid one by one, and Someone Knock on the Door (2004- 2006), a series of long and narrow European-styled doors photographed one after another, it appears that objects that captivate Kang at the moment are captured repeatedly to project or reinforce a certain theme (\u201canother world\u201d) that cannot yet be fathomed.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n

The subjects in the series produced before the first solo exhibition was held might be objects that the artist grew interest in during the shooting or were selected because of the consistency that forms when they are photographed in repetition. On the other hand, the project Others that Kang presents seven years later does not appear to show interest towards the \u201cothers\u201d, which is the title. The people, or the others, that are buried away appear rather to represent Kang\u2019s indifference to their identities. With out-of-focus photographs of a crowd, it is difficult to figure out what they intend. As the series follow the artist\u2019s own idioms and grammar, it is not easy for the viewers to decipher them.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Many of Kang\u2019s series are set in foreign countries or her private space. One of their titles is One Way (2012) which implies traveling (abroad), and another series photographed only the objects she owns. According the artist\u2019s note, Kang interprets Sartre\u2019s book Being and Nothingness from the part \u201cSartre analyzes \u2018the Other\u2019 as the third structure of being\u201d that it is less about building a relationship with the others but more about verifying one\u2019s own existence through the others. With this in consideration, the objects that were selected to be the subjects of her works can be seen as ones that reflect her inner self.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Object O could be a self-portrait alluded by a portrait of objects that give Kang the joy to control them however she pleases. Others could also be a self-portrait that is alluded by out-of-focus photographs that give her a sense of security with the distance assured between the camera lens and the subjects, who are foreigners that are difficult to communicate with and are an anonymous mass of \u201cothers\u201d.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n

While the portraits of objects that were chosen strictly according to Kang\u2019s own idioms and the photographs that intentionally captured scenes out of focus raised the barriers to understand her works, her website that archives her portfolio is neatly arranged in its format and design. The handwritten notes that organized the concept of her work also looks like a diagram where keywords are written in grids and connected to each other with arrows. Upon careful examination, however, the handwritten notes that look like an organized diagram are difficult to interpret. That is also because they follow the idioms that only the artist knows about.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Kang\u2019s earlier works that represented \u201canother world\u201d of self-portrait through photographs of her belongings appear to later represent the others through the project title Others. However, it seems that it actually represents her inner self (another world) that gets a sense of relief from the safety distance between the outer world and herself.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n

P.S. 1. I was going to add, \u201cIt would be better if the works would not be a mere means for relief but would, in the future, leave room for the viewers to get involved with her works and her life (relationships),\u201d but soon became hesitant. It might be an intervention on another world of hers that I don\u2019t yet understand.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n

P.S. 2. Studying how Kang\u2019s work developed, it is, in the end, work that makes you examine and read the state of the artist\u2019s inner world.
