강옥주는 서울 작업실을 중심으로 생활하는 시각예술 작가이다. 그는 2005년 세종문화회관 에서의 ‘지성과 감성 展’을 시작으로 국내외 그룹전시를 가졌다. 2011년 갤러리룩스에서의 개인전 ‘Objet O 展’을 처음으로, 2012년에는 스페인 여행사진을 담은 ‘One Way 展’, 2014년에는 갤러리도스 공모작가로 선정되어 ‘It’s Pouring 展’으로 세번째 개인전을 열었다.
그는 서울예술고등학교를 거쳐 이화여자대학교 미술학부 조소전공과 미술사, 회화판화 대학원을 졸업했다. 학부에서는 입체 작업을, 대학원 이후부터는 사진 작업을 주로 진행해왔다. 2017년부터는 기존의 작업과 테크놀로지와의 접목을 꾀하고 필요한 기술적인 부분을 배워나가면서 새 작업을 전개하고 있다.
강옥주는 주로 일상의 사물을 소재로 작업하는 것을 좋아한다. 그것들로 근본적인 이야기를 하고 싶어한다. 그것은 크게 시간, 존재, 타인들과의 관계에 대한 것들이다. 이런 이야기들은 종종 오래된 질문을 하게 한다. 그래서 그는 많은 시간 책을 읽고 영화를 보며 나름의 답에 접근하려고 노력한다. 또 그는 앙리 마티스를 좋아한다. 특히 그의 만년의 가위로 한 드로잉 작업을 좋아한다. 그는 마티스처럼 열정으로 작가로서의 삶을 이어나갈 수 있길 희망한다.
Okjoo Kang is a visual artist based in Seoul, Korea. She has been in various group exhibitions at home and abroad since 2005. Starting with the solo show ‘Objet O’ at the Lux gallery in 2011, followed by the second ‘One Way’, a display featuring travel photography in 2012. She had the third solo show ‘It’s Pouring’ as a selected artist at the DOS gallery in 2014. Some private collectors have had her works since 2006.
Okjoo graduated from Seoul Arts High School and received her fine art and art history degrees from Ewha Womans University. As an undergraduate, she did three dimensional works. Since graduate school, she has mainly been exploring photography. She has been grafting the technology onto her existing works since 2017 and developing a new work.
Kang likes using ordinary objects as the material for her artwork. She thinks that they tell us something about fundamental things. They are about time, existence and relationships with others largely. The things are often accompanied by old questions. Okjoo reads books and watches movies a lot of the time, and tries to approach her own answers. She likes Henri Matisse also. Especially, she loves his paper cut-out works in his later years. Kang hopes that she is able to manage her life as an artist with passion like Matisse.
